Impossível descrever meu puro prazer estético e literário ao terminar de ler o livrinho de Houellebecq sobre Lovecraft, "Contra o Mundo, Contra a Vida".)

Michel Houellebecq (pronúncia: uélbeq) é, ao lado de Lobo Antunes, meu romancista vivo favorito. Seu "As Partículas Elementares" (1998) é um dos romances mais amplos, cósmicos, iconoclastas, detestáveis, maravilhosos que já li. Como escreveu Julian Barnes, é um romance que "hunts big game while others settle for shooting rabbit."

H.P. Lovecraft (1890-1937) é, em minha modesta e polêmica opinião, um dos grandes autores de língua inglesa do século, capaz de proezas frasísticas inacreditáveis e inigualáveis, único escritor capaz de literalmente descrever o indescritível. Borges era fã, com razão. Quando algum manual de redação imbecil promove uma caça aos advérbios, sempre penso em Lovecraft: o que seria de Lovecraft sem os advérbios? Lovecraft, sozinho, justifica todos os advérbios do mundo.

"H.P. Lovecraft: Contra o Mundo, Contra a Vida" (1991) é uma declaração de amor apaixonada, polêmica e não-acadêmica de um grande escritor a outro, de um iconoclasta ao um conservador, de um maldito a um amaldiçoado. Delícia.

Houellebecq is, on the evidence of The Elementary Particles, the most potentially weighty French novelist to emerge since Tournier. (...) It was Vargas Llosa who came up with the best description of Les Particules Élémentaires: insolent. He meant it, naturally, as a term of praise. There are certain books - sardonic and acutely pessimistic - that systematically affront all our current habits of living, and treat our presumptions of mind as the delusions of the cretinous.

A descrição não poderia ser mais perfeita. Recomendo nos mais enfáticos termos.

Houellebecq has established himself as one of the great international brands of popular literary fiction. But there is a great deal of disagreement over whether he's a genius, a fraud or a reprobate. Responses to his novels largely fall into three categories.

The first is euphoric: Houellebecq as visionary. According to this view, he sees the dehumanising effects of the market, the breakdown of religion and the family, and the unbearable tensions of Western life: the sexual misery, the inevitable conflict between Western morals and Islam. (...)

The second view is that, though his perspective is not necessarily right - and probably rather regrettable - it1s an interesting and prevalent one, and illuminates the attitude of many people in modern France and Europe. As Salman Rushdie put it, "Platform is a novel to go to if you want to understand the France beyond the liberal intelligentsia, the France that gave the left such a bloody nose in the last presidential election, and whose discontents and prejudices the extreme right was able to exploit." (...)

The third attitude is outright disapproval. Houellebecq is a disgusting sexist, racist, eugenicist and pervert, who ought to repulse us. He is a professional provocateur, a marketing whizz, whose success is down to his courting of controversy, to the racist jokes and great dollops of pornography in his work.

Most of the artists I know behaved exactly like entrepreneurs: they carefully reconnoitered emerging markets, then tried to get in fast. Just like entrepreneurs, they had been at the same few colleges, they were cast from the same mold. There were differences, however; in the art market, innovation was at a greater premium than in most other professional sectors. Moreover, artists often worked in packs or networks, in contrast to entrepreneurs, who were solitary beings surrounded by enemies - shareholders ready to drop them at a moment's notice, executives always ready to betray them.

Na primeira vez em que divulguei o The Calls of Ctulhu, um amigo veio me perguntar o que era isso.

Expliquei que o Ciclo de Ctulhu é toda uma mitologia criada por Lovecraft e que as histórias sempre seguem o mesmo padrão: um sujeito está vivendo sua vida pacificamente, entra em contato com os Deuses Anciãos (como Ctulhu) e enlouquece.

E respondeu meu amigo:

- Ah, então é tipo Clarice Lispector, né?

(Naturalmente, a piada só é engraçada porque, de fato, tanto Lovecraft quanto Clarice eram dois autores sempre em busca de dizer o indizível, descrever o indiscritível, comer o incomível, etc etc. Também não é por acaso que sou fã incondicional dos dois.)
